Priyanka takes first plunge into active politics

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has appointed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC general secretary for Uttar Pradesh-East, officially marking his sister's entry into active politics ahead of general elections this year. An official release from the party on Wednesday said Jyotiraditya Scindia would be the AICC general secretary for Uttar Pradesh-West while the present party incharge for the state , Ghulam Nabi Azad, was moved to Haryana.This is the first official role for 47-year-old Priyanka Gandhi, though she campaigned in the family pocket-boroughs of Amethi and Rae Bareli during previous elections . The appointment comes at a time when there is speculation that the younger Gandhi scion would replace mother Sonia Gandhi as a candidate in Rae Bareli. The AICC incharge of Karnataka, KC Venugopal, has also been appointed as the new AICC General Secretary (Organisation) in place of Ashok Gehlot who recently was elected chief minister of Rajasthan Chief Minister.
